Why did Lee McQueen (The Apprentice ) lie on his cv…..and does everyone do it?

It certainly made good television – Lee McQueen being caught out fair and square for lying on his cv.. (His cv outlined that he had completed a two year course when in actual fact he had dropped out after four months) Why did he do it? – We all know academic qualifications are not necessarily top of Sir Alan’s wish list and surely he could demonstrate his career achievements despite the lack of academic achievement.

Is this a relatively isolated incident or does everyone lie on their cv? Is it ever acceptable to lie on your cv? With applications often being pre-screened against a checklist, will anyone really find out if you upgrade your very average 2.2 degree to a more attractive 2.1? Does it really matter that you can just about run to the sweet shop rather than that London Marathon you claim to have completed to make your hobbies and interests more attractive?

What about the employer’s viewpoint – if you found someone had lied on their cv, would you still offer the candidate the job? Or, would you take the view that if someone would lie on their cv what else would they lie about?

I’d welcome your thoughts – and if you are interested in discussing opportunities in management consultancy, please send me your cv too(no fibs please!)

For me the lie on the CV was a non story, one of Sir Alan's trusted advisers said that he had done the same when starting out. But what I could not begin to understand was Lee's appalling spelling and grammar in the application form. For me that showed a poor attitude towards quality and was worth firing him for.

The trouble is that most employers will receive large
numbers of CV for every vacancy. In my area we insist that agencies only send two CVs per role and will only accept submissions from the 5 agencies on our PSL. That still leaves 10 CVs per role and many companies will get more.

If, for example, I was rated 6 out of 10 in a given area and I put that on my CV then I seem worse than everyone who put 7 or 8. The trouble is that some of those people may also only really score 5 or 6 and just be "exaggerating". That won't help me if I don't get the interview because I'm too honest.

So in my opinion it is essential to "exaggerate" on your CV to give yourself the chance of that interview. I wouldn't put any outright lies on it. But I've certainly "oversold" myself.
