2007 was another strong year for the recruitment industry, with agencies acting as an important 'shock absorber' by cushioning employers and workers from increasing economic uncertainty towards the end of the year” according to the influential 'Key Recruitment Trends 2007' report sponsored by leading UK recruiters.

The report revealed a sharp reduction in the number of permanent appointments for the first time in 5 years. This contrasts with the increased use of temporary agency workers across most sectors, with agency workers finding it easier to find work. This was true in all regions with the exception of London.

Research carried out by the Manchester-based research consultancy Market & Business Development has shown that between 2007 and 2012, the UK market for recruitment consultants is expected to demonstrate year-on-year growth, culminating in an overall real term increase of 15% to 32.42 billion pounds (at 2007 prices) in the latter year.
