Sir Stuart Rose’s dual appointment at M&S has unsurprisingly generated a great deal of comment.

One retired M&S executive was allegedly quoted as saying:

“If Sir Stuart and Lord Burns think this is the best move then I don’t see what the problem is.
“What is the difference between chief executive and executive chairman? It’s a different title, that’s all, he is still running the business.
“Stuart has done a good job and, put it this way, you wouldn’t want him to leave would you?”

But what do company secretaries think?

Don't see what the issue is really. Sir Stuart Rose has a gold-plated reputation and should be given the benefit of the doubt even if executive power is more heavily weighted in his favour for now.It shows he has M&S foremost in his thoughts.

Of more concern are the various "portfolio" NEDs who have positions on various corporate boards yet physically cannot devote the time or energy to serious boardroom issues as they and their abilities are spread too thinly around the boards on which they sit.
