What’s in a (domain) name?

It is easy in the current age of Face book, MySpace and the remaining myriad of self promoting websites to forget the wider implications of having your own public pseudonym.

It never ceases to amaze me however how someone otherwise completely intent on developing their respectable career can see fit to casually use their social web address in a work situation. Some of the more blatant I have come across recently include:

Sexyblond @......

Mouthymary@....

beerlord@.....

I have worked in recruitment for many years and my advice is don’t mix business and pleasure in this instance. If you wish for your email address to reflect your social being then set up a separate email for business. Many employers will check out your email address well in advance of your long carefully composed cover letter or if it’s an agency application, their clients can require email addresses right from the point of application (as they wish to seek further confidential information in respect of applications). Whatever the rationale for your witty web address, in my experience in a business context, it is not worth taking the risk….

What do you think?

I have to agree, though none of my addresses are a pseudonym, I still use different email accounts, for business, social and educational purposes. The person I am contacting and the reason for contacting them determines which of these I choose to use. For example, as a current student I would use my university email to contact someone about a job. This is because it gives the receiver, automatically, information about where I am coming from and what level of experience I am likely to have. If I was looking to hire someone into my firm and they sent me an email from “Mouthymary@....” I would already be forming the wrong or perhaps even the ‘true’ impression of what this person is like.

Something I also find interesting is the content people put on social networking sites. I feel there is always a risk that a potential employer has easy access to a vast amount of information about you and your background. I remember seeing a case of some young successful businessmen in a video of themselves, drunk and climbing on a car that they then saw fit to post internet. This resulted in them being sacked from the firm and prosecuted by the police. While this is an extreme case I would be interested to hear from an employer their opinions as to what extent social networking sites can cause business and pleasure to mix?

....or perhaps it makes the recruitment process that little bit easier. In the rare instance that the business needs a "mouthy etc" - there's little doubt that you've found one. If the job calls for complete discretion and common sense, well I guess they're helping with the elimination process. LOL!
